MEXICO: Wave of violence revives security concerns in Chiapas

A wave of violence swept San Cristóbal de las Casas, the second-largest city and ‘cultural capital’ of Chiapas state, following the murder on 17 April of an influential local artisan. This prompted the US embassy in Mexico to release security alerts for Chiapas – which is typically less affected by the high levels of violence that plague other states – as the killing prompted a series of violent altercations in the streets of San Cristóbal.
