In brief: Unemployment rate stagnating in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published new figures which show that the unemployment rate stood at 2.8% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – in April 2023, equating to 1.7m people. There was no variation in the unemployment rate from the previous month. In yearly terms, the rate dropped by 0.2 percentage points in comparison with April 2022. According to Inegi, the number of people in Mexico’s economically active population who were employed in April 2023 equalled 58.9m, up 1.2m on the same month of 2022. Inegi noted that the number of people employed in the informal sector totalled 32.2m, equivalent to 54.7% of the employed population – a decrease of 0.8 percentage points compared with the same month in 2022.
