More voters than feared

In the run up to the 5 July midterm elections, electoral officials, the government and the Roman Catholic Church were all worried that the turnout would be embarrassingly low. On 29 June, the president of the Tribunal Electoral de Poder Judicial de la Federación (TEPJF) said that she feared that only 30% of the electorate would vote. The president of the Instituto Federal Electoral, which is running the elections, reckoned that the turnout would be only 40%.
