Martí­nez goes and PAN is stunned

The scale of the defeat for the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) in the mid-term elections on 5 July prompted the resignation of Germán Martí­nez Cazares, the PAN president. Martí­nez was pushed into the party presidency by his close chum, President Felipe Calderón, so his swift departur is a clear effort by Calderón to create a firebreak between him and angry party members. Early signs suggest that this break is unlikely to hold.
