VENEZUELA: Illegal miners threatened with ‘judicial measures’
The strategic commander of Venezuela’s armed forces (FANB), General Domingo Hernández Lárez, announced on 19 September that “judicial measures” would be taken to protect the Yapacana national park from illegal miners. This came after a clash between soldiers and miners left two people dead and six injured on 14 September, in what appears to be part of a growing pushback against the military’s crackdown on illegal mining.
