GUATEMALA: Rallying behind Arévalo’s victory

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in support of Guatemala’s president-elect Bernardo Arévalo who is facing what he describes as a “coup” to overturn his victory in the 20 August presidential run-off. Arévalo, who last week suspended the transition process following raids carried out on the electoral authority by the attorney general’s office, whose head María Consuelo Porras, an ally of President Alejandro Giammattei, he named as one of the “coupsters”, has won renewed international backing.
