In brief: Brazil’s nominal deficit rises in August

* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released the fiscal statistics for August, which showed a monthly primary deficit of R$22.8bn (US$4.53bn), but a nominal deficit – which includes both the primary result and debt interest payments – of R$106.6bn. While the primary deficit was down from the R$35.8bn registered in July, the nominal deficit for August saw a monthly increase from R$81.9bn in July and a year-on-year increase from the R$65.9bn registered in August 2022. The latest nominal deficit takes the accumulated nominal deficit in the 12 months to August up to R$762.5bn (7.30% of GDP), marking an increase from the R$721.8bn (6.95% of GDP) registered for the 12 months to July. The accumulated nominal deficit has been increasing every month from April to August.
