* Brazil’s minister of mining & energy, Alexandre Silveira, has pitched Brazil as “fertile ground” for investment in renewable energy at a business conference in Paris, 'Fórum França-Europa-Brasil Esfera'. Silveira announced that the French multinational TotalEnergies will invest R$500bn (US$98.39bn) in renewable energy projects in Brazil, such as offshore and onshore wind and solar energy. Despite Silveira’s rhetoric about Brazil’s green energy potential, the TotalEnergies investment will also contribute to oil and gas exploration. According to a press release from the energy ministry, TotalEnergies currently produces an average of 138,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and over 5.9m cubic metres of natural gas per day. In Paris, Silveira also met Fatih Birol, the executive-director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) to discuss Brazil’s plans to boost biofuel production.
