Mexico has a new energy minister. On 16 October President Andrés Manuel López Obrador named Miguel Ángel Maciel Torres to head up the energy ministry (Sener) following the departure of Rocío Nahle, who had served as energy minister since the start of López Obrador’s term, for electoral reasons (see box). As a veteran of Mexico’s state-run oil company (Pemex), Maciel’s trajectory is steeped in oil and gas – unsurprisingly not representing a pivot towards clean energy.
