* Colombia’s President
Gustavo Petro has met his Chinese counterpart
Xi Jinping in Beijing, where the two leaders released a joint statement announcing that they
“decided to elevate the bilateral relationship to the level of a Strategic Association”. Among other things, delegations from China and Colombia signed sanitary protocols that will enable Colombia to export beef and quinoa to the Chinese market; agreed to establish working groups to boost trade and investment flows; and pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agriculture, education, industry, sustainable development, the digital economy, culture, and the countries’ state media outlets. There were no major announcements on infrastructure investments, which the Colombian government had indicated
would be a key focus of Petro’s visit, although Colombian officials did meet with the two Chinese companies that are building the first line of the Bogotá metro – Xi’an Metro Company and China Harbour Engineering Company. Colombia has yet to join China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’, which enables cooperation on major infrastructure projects.
