* The metalworker union of São José dos Campos, a municipality in Brazil’s south-eastern state of São Paulo, has announced that the US carmaker General Motors (GM) has reversed 1,245 layoffs in its factories in the state. Workers from three factories (in São José dos Campos, São Caetano do Sul, and Mogi das Cruzes) had been on strike since 23 October, after GM announced mass layoffs on 21 October. A regional labour court had obliged GM to reverse its decision and GM challenged the ruling, taking the case up to Brazil’s superior labour court (TST), which decided on 3 November to maintain the regional court’s ruling. The regional and superior courts both deemed the layoffs to be illegal, as an employer cannot fire workers en masse without any warning or negotiation. In its announcement, the metalworker union hailed the TST ruling as a “historic victory” and stated that union leaders would meet GM representatives to negotiate the terms of the factory workers’ return.
