If Argentina’s election were decided by the outcome of the sole presidential debate of the second-round campaign on 12 November then Sergio Massa could rest assured that he would enter the Casa Rosada on 10 December as the country’s next head of state. Massa, the candidate of the ruling Peronist coalition Unión por la Patria (UP), ran rings around Javier Milei throughout the two-hour debate and was never caught off guard, despite the dire state of the economy presenting his far-right populist opponent with a clear opening to skewer a candidate who remains the economy minister.
