BRAZIL: Heatwave afflicts large swathes of Brazil
States in Brazil’s south-east, centre-west, and parts of the north have been experiencing an intense heatwave for the past week, with some parts of Rio de Janeiro registering temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. The national meteorological institute (Inmet) has released red alerts for the extreme heat, while the environment ministry has deployed more resources to combat forest fires which have intensified in the central-western region amid the hotter, drier conditions.
