MEXICO: Prominent non-binary magistrate killed

Protesters have taken to the streets across Mexico to reject the official explanation of the death of Jesús Ociel Baena, Mexico’s first openly non-binary magistrate and a prominent LGBTQI activist. The Aguascalientes state attorney general’s office (FGE) has stated that Baena’s killing was a crime of passion. However, the federal government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as well as numerous rights groups and civil society organisations, have called on the FGE to investigate the incident from a gender perspective and as a hate crime against the LGBTQI community.
