Bukele clears final hurdle in re-election bid

The faint prospect that El Salvador’s supreme electoral tribunal (TSE) might reject the creative re-interpretation of the constitution by the supreme court’s constitutional chamber (SC) and refuse to register the candidacy of President Nayib Bukele ahead of next February’s election has been snuffed out. The TSE went along with the SC’s ruling in September 2021 before registering the candidacies of five opposition parties. Polls suggest Bukele will coast to victory.
