In brief: Nicaragua hails China food security aid

* Nicaragua’s government led by President Daniel Ortega has announced that China has donated 1,481 tonnes (t) of wheat and 2,595t of urea to boost Nicaragua’s food security. According to state mouthpiece el19Digital, the supplies will enable prices of flour and fertilisers to remain stable. This is the latest sign of burgeoning relations between China and Nicaragua following the establishment of bilateral relations in December 2021 after the Ortega government severed ties with Taiwan. Also indicative of this increasing cooperation, the two countries signed a free trade agreement (FTA) on 31 August.
