The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) announced on 30 November that Brazil has been invited to join Opec+, a wider grouping of countries that participate in Opec initiatives. The announcement came on the first day of the United Nations climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (COP28), where President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva endeavoured to promote Brazil’s efforts in tackling the climate crisis and to discuss the environmental concerns expressed by European leaders which have obstructed the trade negotiations between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).
