MEXICO: What next for MC?

It has been a turbulent week for Mexico’s leftist opposition-aligned Movimiento Ciudadano (MC). The party lost its 2024 presidential pre-candidate, Samuel García, following a dispute over who would take over as Nuevo León governor while he was campaigning. At one point, it looked like the MC would lose its candidate and its last remaining governorship – following the decision of Jalisco governor Enrique Alfaro to leave the party in August [WR-23-35]. With García back in the governorship, order has been somewhat restored, and the MC is setting a triumphant tone for the future. However, the task ahead looks far more daunting than the party’s leadership is making out.
