Brazilian salt mine at risk of collapse

The mayor of Maceió, João Henrique Caldas, declared a 180-day state of emergency last week in the capital of Brazil’s north-eastern state of Alagoas due to the potential collapse of a salt mine operated by the petrochemical company Braskem. This is not the first time that Braskem’s activities have caused seismic disturbances in Alagoas and the latest signs of geological instability have prompted calls to hold the petrochemical giant to account.
