VENEZUELA-GUYANA: Essequibo dispute returning to status quo
One month ago, a frantic regional effort was underway to prevent escalating tensions between Venezuela and Guyana from spilling into a military conflict over the Essequibo region [WR-23-50]. Now the situation seems to have largely stabilised, thanks in large part to an emergency summit between Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro and Guyana’s Irfaan Ali. Whilst the risks of a conflict have not been entirely eliminated, the summit saw protocols put in place to prevent any incidents between the two countries from snowballing into major crises.
