MEXICO: Political violence as electoral year begins

The dangers facing those standing for office in Mexico, particularly in local government seats, were thrown into the spotlight with the killing of three opposition candidates between 4-5 January. The murders have highlighted the high risk of political violence that 2024’s bumper electoral year brings. The political opposition has also used the killings to highlight insecurity more generally in Mexico under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
