CHILE: Voters reject conservative constitution proposal

In September 2022, Chileans rejected a draft for a new constitution, which was considered too left-wing. On 17 December 2023, the public voted against another proposal, on this occasion drawn up by a constitutional council dominated by right-wing parties. Both documents prioritised the ideological convictions of the majority drawing up the constitution rather than seeking a moderate compromise that would be accepted by most Chileans. As a result, the same constitution drafted under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) will remain in place.
