BRAZIL: Federal government addresses floods in Rio

The federal government sent an inter-ministerial working group to Brazil’s south-eastern state of Rio de Janeiro on 16 January. Heavy rains battered the state over the night of 13 January, flooding neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro city and its surrounding municipalities. Other states in Brazil’s southern and south-eastern region, such as Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, have also experienced fierce storms recently, raising public concerns over the resilience of urban infrastructure amid extreme weather patterns, expected to become more frequent and intense due to climate change.
