SURINAME: Bouterse flees to avoid sentence

Suriname’s former president Desi Bouterse has gone missing. The public prosecution service gave Bouterse until 12 January to hand himself in to serve a prison sentence but the deadline passed and there was no sign of him. When the authorities came knocking, his wife said that he had no intention of surrendering, insisting that a 2012 amnesty law shielded him from prosecution. But this law was declared illegal by the constitutional court and, with his appeal having been rejected, Bouterse’s legal options have been exhausted.
