HONDURAS: Ruling party faces new scandal
On 3 July Angélica Álvarez, the vice presidential candidate for Honduras’ ruling leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) ahead of the November 2025 general elections, confirmed that Isis Cuéllar, a vice president of the country’s 128-member unicameral legislature, had been suspended from the party.

MEXICO: Top Mexican boxer arrested by ICE
On 3 July US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced its agents had arrested a high-profile Mexican boxer, Julio César Chávez Jr, in Los Angeles the previous day on charges of being in the US illegally and will likely face “expedited removal” (deportation) to Mexico where he faces organised crime charges.

CHILE: Boric pushes for joint electoral list for congress
On 3 July Chile’s President Gabriel Boric took part in an event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrest and ‘disappearance’ of the ten-member clandestine leadership committee of the Partido Socialista (PS) during the military dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).
