DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Main candidates face off in first presidential debate
On 24 April the first presidential debate took place in the Dominican Republic ahead of the 19 May elections involving the three main candidates: President Luis Abinader of the ruling Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM); former president (Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, PLD, 1996-2000, 2004-2012) Leonel Fernández, now running for Fuerza del Pueblo (FP); and Abel Martínez (PLD) the now former mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros (2016-2024), capital of Santiago province.

CHILE: Carabineros chief to resign
On 24 April Chile’s government confirmed that Ricardo Yáñez, the general director of the militarised Carabineros police force, would resign before he is formally charged with responsibility for human rights abuses committed during the 2019 ‘Estallido Social’ unrest.
