The government is confident that it will clinch a free-trade deal with the
US. It expects the deal to be sorted out at the final round of negotiations in
Washington, which start on 20 January. Officials say that only four issues
remain to be resolved, though these include the tricky ones of telecommunications
and insurance. The other two issues are agriculture, always a
thorny subject in trade negotiations, and textiles. The textile issue looks
resolvable: the only sticking point is rules of origin for woollen and cotton
