In brief: Port expansion announced in southern Peru

*Peru’s investment promotion agency (Proinversión) has announced that it is extending a contract with the Peruvian dock building company Terminal Internacional del Sur (Tisur) for a US$600m development of port infrastructure in the country’s southern macro-region, which comprises the regions of Arequipa, Apurímac, Cusco, Moquegua, Puno, and Tacna. The new contract will be signed on 28 July and will “consolidate the south as a logistical axis for mineral exports and foreign trade,” according to a Proinversión statement. Among other things, Tisur will be contracted to build a new multipurpose berth for use by large ships with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 60,000 in Arequipa’s Puerto Matarani port, as well as a breakwater and a mineral storage facility with a capacity of 40,000 tonnes. Proinversión said that 65% of the investments are expected to be carried out in the next three or four years to meet the growing demand of the mining sector and to boost other strategic projects in the south of the country.
