NICARAGUA: Montealegre emerges as man to beat

Eduardo Montealegre is shaping up as the man most likely to succeed President Enrique Bolaños after November's elections. Montealegre, a dissident from the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC), edged ahead of Herty Lewites, a dissident from the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), in the polls. He is also playing up his role in breaking the deadlock in the national assembly, over appointing a new leadership committee, by withdrawing his party's candidate.
