CUBA: Seat on UN human rights council

Cuba has won a seat on the newly-formed UN Human Rights Council, which replaces the discredited UN Commission on Human Rights. Election to the council was a coup for President Fidel Castro, demonstrating that Cuba has built up solid international support over the years in a way that Venezuela, which sought and failed to win a seat, has not. A further 46 countries also won seats, including Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay from Latin America.
