HAITI: Préval takes office but needs to secure majority

René Préval was finally sworn in as president of Haiti on 14 May, more than three months after the elections. Haiti will not have a fully functioning government until June, however, when the last few disputed seats in the national assembly are decided. Préval's party, Lespwa, which will not have a majority in either the senate or the chamber of deputies, will try and stitch up a coalition in the meantime before Préval has to negotiate with the national assembly over a new prime minister, who will in turn choose a cabinet.
