GUYANA: Coup rumours swirl as violence continues

As violent crime and poor policing continues to dominate the headlines in Guyana, rumours of an opposition coup in the offing have begun to emerge. Following the assassination of the agriculture minister, Satyadeow Sawh, at the end of April and the suspension of parliament ahead of as yet unscheduled elections, the political atmosphere in the country is increasingly febrile. The unease has been exacerbated by comments from a wanted Indo-Guyanese drug trafficker, now in hiding and believed to be connected with state-sponsored death squads, who claims that the US is meddling in Guyanese politics in an attempt to bring the Afro-Guyanese People's National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) back to power in the forthcoming elections.
