Brazilian authorities have launched an investigation into an alleged corruption scheme in 2019-2024 involving the national social security agency (INSS), in which an estimated R$6.3bn (US$1.1bn) was improperly diverted from pensions and retirement funds. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has responded by dismissing the INSS chief Alessandro Stefanutto, who been implicated in the probe.
