BRAZIL: Lava Jato leads to another former president’s arrest

Right-wing former president Fernando Collor de Mello (1990-1992) was arrested on 25 April. In 2023 he was convicted on charges related to the sprawling Lava Jato corruption investigation, and now that his final appeal against the conviction has been rejected, he has been ordered to begin serving his sentence. Collor de Mello is the third former president to have been arrested due to Lava Jato, following the imprisonment of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2018 and the preventive arrest of Michel Temer (2016-2019) in 2019.
