ECUADOR: Wide-ranging security bill clears congress

Ecuador’s national assembly has approved the so-called ‘Law of National Solidarity’, a sweeping piece of legislation with which President Daniel Noboa’s government aims to strengthen the fight against organised crime. Among other things, the law will enable private companies to donate equipment to the authorities in return for tax benefits, make security personnel less vulnerable to prosecution, and modify penalties for drug possession.
