Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) testified before the supreme court (STF) on 10 June in a case involving an alleged military coup plot following his 2022 election defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva [WR-25-12]. In the televised deposition, it was expected that Bolsonaro would use the spotlight to turn the court hearing into a performance. But he adopted a more restrained tone than in his speeches, to avoid further antagonising the judicial authorities that he has often insulted.
