MEXICO: Sheinbaum tackles extortion

One of the most notable ways in which President Claudia Sheinbaum has differed from her predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), is her approach to tackling crime. While López Obrador favoured a strategy that limited confrontation with criminal groups, Sheinbaum’s administration has been combatting issues head-on and directly targeting certain criminal activities. On 6 July her public security minister, Omar García Harfuch, announced a new strategy for combatting the crime of extortion, which increased by almost 60% under López Obrador’s presidency.
