Evelyn Matthei, out front for so long at the start of the electoral race, has been reeled in and passed. It is not clear whether Matthei, the presidential pick of the traditional right-wing opposition coalition Chile Vamos, has a second wind to claw back the two candidates that have swept ahead of her. Recent polls appear to vindicate José Antonio Kast of the far-right Partido Republicano (PR), who opted against taking part in a broad primary election between candidates on the right of the political spectrum last month and to compete directly in the first round of presidential elections in November, where he is well-placed to progress to a run-off against Jeannette Jara, who is running for the left-of-centre ruling coalition. Kast’s calculation that the PR does not need to agree a joint list for congress with Chile Vamos, however, forging an alliance with fellow far-right parties instead, is riskier, and could result in his governing without a majority if he wins.End of preview - This article contains approximately 765 words.
