URUGUAY: Authorities hail major cocaine bust

Uruguay’s government led by President Yamandú Orsi has announced a major cocaine seizure. The bust, which equated to over two tonnes (t) of the drug, is among the largest in the country’s history. Authorities have hailed the seizure as a major blow to organised crime in Uruguay. However, the seizure also reflects Uruguay’s growing role as a cocaine transit and, increasingly, storage country. The bust will raise pressure on the Orsi government to demonstrate what it is doing to tackle the issue.
