President Nayib Bukele’s recent appointment of the captain and doctor Karla Edith Trigueros as El Salvador’s new education minister has raised concerns of a militarisation of education. It comes amid a war on gangs that has already significantly increased the power of security forces through a state of exception in place since late March 2022 which continues to draw major human rights concerns.
