COSTA RICA: Mega-jail to begin construction sooner than expected

Costa Rica’s plans to build a new mega-prison inspired by the example of El Salvador, which is set to provide technical assistance, look set to move ahead sooner than expected as part of its attempt to address insecurity. Tackling crime remains a major priority for the right-of-centre government led by President Rodrigo Chaves in the face of record homicides, attributed to the growing presence of international drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) in the country.
