President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a cabinet meeting on 26 August in which he said that any cabinet minister not willing to defend the government should resign. This has been interpreted as a warning to the centrist and conservative parties of the so-called ‘centrão’ given cabinet ministries in the left-of-centre Lula government in exchange for congressional support.
