CHILE: Deadly mining accident spells broader challenges for Codelco

A deadly accident at the largest mine of Chilean copper giant Codelco has forced the state-owned company to cut production forecasts for this year and raised doubts about its long-term expansion plan. On 31 July a tunnel collapsed in Codelco’s El Teniente mine, killing six people and halting operations for a week. Nearly 4km of tunnel were affected. Considered one of Chile’s worst mining accidents in decades, this disaster was caused by tremors probably triggered by mining activity itself.
