Chile’s President Gabriel Boric gave his final speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 23 September, as he prepares to hand over the presidency early next year following elections in just under two months. Boric used his speech to denounce Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the war in Ukraine, as well as advocating for democracy and action against climate change. He also took the opportunity to nominate Chile’s former president Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010, 2014-2018) as the next UN secretary general. Boric’s speech took place against the backdrop of a highly polarised presidential race in Chile [WR-25-37], where polls currently suggest that the presidency is likely to fall out of the hands of Boric’s ruling left-wing coalition, as the country looks to swing to the right.End of preview - This article contains approximately 943 words.
