BRAZIL: Lula and Trump signal easing of tensions

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held his first phone call with US President Donald Trump on 6 October after months of bilateral tensions. In July and August, the US imposed sanctions on Brazilian officials and raised tariff rates to 50% for many products. In response, Lula signalled a defiant stance against US tariffs and pressure, contributing to a boost in popularity. But it now appears that Lula and Trump are willing to meet and discuss tariff rates and other issues.
