BRAZIL: Lula to get another supreme court nominee

A justice on Brazil’s 11-member supreme court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, announced on 9 October that he planned to retire. He will officially step down from his role on 18 October. With a vacant seat on the country’s top court, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has the chance to pick another justice. Political pundits have been suggesting potential options, including the solicitor general Jorge Messias, the legal counsel of the federal government, and the former senate president, Rodrigo Pacheco (2021-2025).
