BOLIVIA: Áñez released days before change of government

Bolivia’s former president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) was released from prison on 6 November after the supreme court (TSJ) overturned her 2022 sentence for illegally assuming the presidency. The circumstances of Áñez’s rise to power remain hotly disputed, with the outgoing left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) claiming that she seized the presidency in a coup, and conservatives insisting that she was next in the line of succession after her predecessor Evo Morales (2006-2019) fled the country.
