Pedro Castillo and Martín Vizcarra were handed lengthy prison sentences on back-to-back days this week, becoming the latest in a growing line of former Peruvian presidents to be convicted. Castillo, who held power for just over 16 months between 2021 and 2022, was sentenced to over 11 years in prison by the supreme court on 27 November for an attempted self-coup in December 2022. Vizcarra, who was in office for over two years from 2018 to 2020, was given a longer prison sentence, of 14 years, for passive bribery. Of the two convictions, that of Vizcarra has the greater potential to have an impact on the outcome of the presidential elections next April.End of preview - This article contains approximately 629 words.
