VENEZUELA: Trump tightens the screws in call with Maduro

Direct talks with Washington had been viewed by Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro as an off-ramp as his government faces the possibility of being forcibly deposed by the US military. Maduro got his phone call with President Donald Trump last week, but it did not produce any relief for his regime. On the contrary, Trump reportedly rejected Maduro’s proposal to step down on his own terms, and he set a deadline for Maduro to leave Venezuela which has now passed.
