VENEZUELA: US moves to cut off oil revenue

The past week has seen a major escalation in US efforts to push Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro from power. Less than a week after US troops seized a sanctioned tanker carrying Venezuelan oil in the Caribbean, President Donald Trump announced on 16 December that there would be a “total blockade” on all sanctioned vessels travelling to and from Venezuela. This would sever the country’s most crucial income stream – the export of oil using a ‘shadow fleet’ of tankers to evade international sanctions.
